Say No to Business Lunches!

Often during my travels abroad with business delegations, along with professional learnings – which I share in my Business Blog  http://prince4csr.blogspot.in/I also discover many funny and uniquely quirky facets of Incredible India and Indians, which I fondly recollect and share here:

During a visit to the Hannover Messe http://www.hannovermesse.de/home our delegation was invited to a Business Lunch. While I was aware of the implications of a business lunch, many in our group was not really aware.

With German precision, the meeting started on time and there were presentations, casestudies and other business transactions. As the meeting was going on, there were plates of sandwiches, snacks, fruit juices being passed around. In addition, there were fresh fruits, assorted beverages, salads and more at the side table.

The meeting dragged on and our German friends, grabbed the meat sandwiches and our Indian friends, the cheese and veg sandwiches. Soon enough, everyone around the table were munching and quenching...and taking notes on their laptops. Some even took snapshots on their compact cameras (those days mobile phone cameras were yet to make a mark)

The meeting inevitably grinded to a halt and it was time for us to depart. After a round of handshakes and exchange of business cards, I was ready to lead the group outside. Some of our members lingered on and I could not understand the reason for them wanting to stay around even after the meeting. Finally, one member broke the silence and said “Where is the lunch boss? ...I am hungry” Apparently, used to heavy 3 course buffet lunches back home in India, our Indian friends could not appreciate the subtle yet sumptuous sandwiches and snacks served as “Business Lunch”

It took them many more “Business Lunches” to finally understand the baffled look on the face of our German hosts.

Having a Ball

There’s something inherently beautiful about watching a child play in carefree abandon. Completely unaware of the surroundings and just enjoying the moment with glee and innocence... Recently, in Uganda, from my apartment window, I was watching an impromptu game of football. Just a few kids and a lone girl in the mix – kicking the ball around on a dusty, rough patch of ground under the shade of trees. Some of them were running around barefoot and others with whatever footwear they had on. They were kicking the ball in some direction – an invisible goal post on either side. Perhaps their goal was just to have fun. Shoving and pushing, they all seemed to converge onto the ball, each trying to get hold of it and kick it. The dust rose above their excited chatter, and the increasing decibels were a testimony to their intensity. For all its earnestness, the game had just a motley gathering of spectators – mostly younger kids standing on the sides and cheering excitedly. Some of the ...

Vintage Vibes

A few of our batchmates from 1986 -’88 decided on an impromptu get- together on a cloudy Chennai evening on January 23rd.  With few weeks left, the planning became hectic, venues were shortlisted after thorough analysis, menu was planned to accommodate several palates and sensitivities. WhatsApp messages flirted back and forth for confirmations. Several friends weighed in on their contacts and compelled them to re-think any rain checks that might spoil the evening.  Finally, the day arrived. The chosen venue – Malayalee Club , off Spur-tank road – was a perfect choice to relive those days that we used to roar on our bikes as young college kids. Only, this time around, we arrived quietly in cars and cabs.  Google maps guided us to the venue. Once we reached, we switched off Google and just followed the high decibel conversations and reached the second floor – the source of all the commotion.  As we entered the room, we were surrounded by loud cheers and warm hugs. 2024 – The Year of Leaplings!*

It’s December 31st, and time to pause and look back at the whirlwind that was 2024. Arguably one of the most tumultuous years in recent memory, the world endured overwhelming natural disasters and brutal wars. Amidst the chaos and destruction, though, there were moments where humanity found ways to bring hope and relief, proving resilience even in the darkest of times. These are just my personal reflections on the events that stood out to me this year—not a comprehensive report, but a journey through the moments that resonated deeply. As always, I’ve touched upon key world events, happenings in India, and the highs and lows right here in Chennai. Here’s to leaving behind the challenges of 2024 and stepping into a brighter, better New Year 2025! 10. Trump Triumphs,  Thulasendrapuram Weeps:  Trumping all predictions former President Donald Trump dodged a bullet and won the presidential election against incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris in November.
